Early Orthodontic Treatment in Richmond, VA

When Is the Right Time for an Orthodontic Evaluation?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Early orthodontic screenings help identify potential issues with jaw growth, tooth eruption, and bite development before they become more complex.

At All Star Orthodontics, early evaluations allow us to guide your child’s smile development and determine the ideal timing for treatment if it is needed. Schedule a complimentary consultation with our board-certified orthodontist to ensure your child’s smile is developing as it should.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from an Early Orthodontic Evaluation

Parents often wonder whether their child’s teeth and jaws are developing normally. An early orthodontic visit is recommended if you notice:

  • Crooked or crowded teeth

  • Large gaps between teeth

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth

  • Difficulty chewing or biting

  • Crossbites, overbites, or underbites

  • A family history of orthodontic concerns

Even if no visible issues are present, an early evaluation can provide peace of mind and help plan for the future.

Why Early Orthodontic Screening Matters

Around age seven, permanent teeth begin to erupt, making it an ideal time for an orthodontic specialist to evaluate dental and jaw development. An early orthodontic evaluation can identify concerns such as crowding, spacing issues, bite misalignment, or problems with tooth eruption.

While treatment is not always necessary at this stage, early detection allows certain issues to be corrected before they worsen. Addressing problems early can reduce the need for more invasive treatment later, including tooth extractions or jaw surgery.

What Is Early Phase Orthodontic Treatment?

Early Phase orthodontic treatment, often referred to as Phase I treatment, is recommended in select cases to address specific developmental concerns while a child is still growing. When treatment is needed at an early age, it is typically limited to six to twelve months and focuses on guiding jaw growth, creating space for permanent teeth, or correcting bite issues.

After Phase I treatment is complete, your child will be monitored as permanent teeth continue to erupt. In some cases, no further treatment is needed. If additional orthodontic treatment is recommended later, early intervention often shortens overall treatment time and improves final results.

Growth Monitoring and Complimentary Visits

If immediate treatment is not indicated, early orthodontic visits still play an important role. These appointments allow Dr. Matt Cline to monitor growth and tooth development over time and determine the ideal moment to begin treatment if needed.

At All Star Orthodontics, we offer complimentary consultations, diagnostic x-rays, and growth observation visits. These visits also help children become comfortable with our office, team, and orthodontic environment.
