Understanding Your Child’s Smile Development
As children grow, their teeth and jaws go through many changes. Monitoring your child’s smile development is an important part of ensuring healthy teeth, proper bite alignment, and a confident smile in the future.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
By age 7, children typically have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which makes it an ideal time for an orthodontic evaluation. Early detection doesn’t always mean immediate treatment, but it allows an orthodontist to guide growth and plan for the most effective intervention if needed.
7 Reasons to See Dr. Cline by Age 7
During an early evaluation, Dr. Cline can:
- Identify extra or missing teeth
- Identify crowding and spacing issues
- Identify harmful bite issues
- Identify jaw growth concerns, such as a narrow palate
- Assess proper teeth eruption patterns
- Identify sleep apnea and other airway issues
- Correct harmful oral habits
Even if your child isn’t ready for treatment, early evaluation is still valuable. Children who are not yet ready for braces or other interventions can enter our Observation Program, where we continue to monitor their development every 6–12 months. These check-ups include x-rays and evaluations to ensure treatment begins at the right time, if needed.
The Benefits of Early Ortho Screenings
- Creates a personalized roadmap for your child’s orthodontic needs
- Can prevent or reduce the severity of future treatment
- Encourages healthy oral habits and awareness from a young age
- Helps your child feel confident in their smile as they grow
