Halloween with Braces and Clear Aligners: Candy to Skip and Treats to Enjoy

Halloween candy for a guide to treats to enjoy and candy to avoid with braces and clear aligners.

Halloween is full of costumes, candy, and fun! If you’re wearing braces or clear aligners, a few smart choices can help you enjoy your treats while keeping your smile on track.

Braces: Which Candy Should You Skip?

Hard, sticky, and chewy treats can loosen brackets or bend wires. When sorting your Halloween haul, set aside:

  • Sticky candy: Caramels, taffy, chewy gummies, and gum.

  • Hard candy: Lollipops, jawbreakers, and any candy you might be tempted to bite or crunch.

  • Crunchy treats: Candy with nuts, popcorn balls, and toffee.

Even one broken bracket can mean an extra visit for repairs, so choosing braces-friendly treats is worth it.

Treats That Are Easier on Braces

You can still enjoy something sweet! Softer treats are generally gentler on brackets and wires. Good options include:

  • Plain chocolate without nuts or caramel

  • Peanut butter cups

  • Soft marshmallows

Take small bites, and remember that softer candy still contains sugar. “Braces-friendly” doesn’t mean cavity-proof!

Clear Aligners: Take Them Out Before Treats

Clear aligners give you more flexibility with food, but always remove them before eating candy. While your aligners are in, stick to plain water. Sugary drinks like soda, juice, or cider can get trapped against your teeth.

Keep your aligners in their case while you eat, instead of wrapping them in a napkin where they could accidentally be thrown away. Brush your teeth before putting them back in, paying extra attention around any attachments. If you can’t brush right away, rinse your mouth well with water, then brush as soon as you can.

Stay on track with your daily wear time. A Halloween celebration shouldn’t turn into an entire evening without your aligners!

Give Your Smile Some Extra Attention

After enjoying your Halloween treats, brush carefully around brackets and along the gumline, and floss daily. Candy can collect around braces, raising the risk of cavities and white spots that can stay on teeth after braces come off.
